Gabe Newell to be inducted into BAFTA Fellowship

Submitted by on Tuesday, 26 February 2013No Comment

gabe-newell-portraitGabe Newell, managing director of Valve and one of the most respected figures in the games industry, is to become a fellow of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The prestigious award acknowledges Newell’s outstanding contribution to videogames, and is to be formally presented at the British Academy Video Game Awards next week, on 5th March. As co-founder of Valve Corporation, Newell has overseen the development of such high-profile game series as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress and many more.

Originally a vocal opponent of the PlayStation 3, Newell was forced to rethink his opinion after Sony allowed Valve to support Steam in the PS3 version of Portal 2. Since then, the developer has definitely favoured Sony over their biggest rival (and Newell’s ex-employer), Microsoft. We’d bet money on this trend continuing with the PlayStation 4, especially given the console’s PC-like architecture.

Whatever your views on his outspoken manner, Gabe Newell’s contribution to our favourite pastime cannot be understated. Steam is easily the best digital distribution platform in the industry, and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to claim that many videogames would simply not exist (or would at least be significantly different) without Half-Life 2.

And we’re sure Half-Life 3 will be just as game changing… once Gabe finally decides to announce it.
