PS3A PlayTime: 22nd-28th July 2013

the-walking-dead-imageCan you say ‘The Last of Us’? Whereas most new releases disappear from PS3A PlayTime after a few short weeks, Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic survival horror continues to come out on top. Also getting some love this week were Final Fantasy XIII, Saints Row: The Third, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark, The Walking Dead and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward.

It will come as no real surprise that this week has once again been dominated by The Last of Us. I just can’t stop playing that game! I don’t think any multiplayer mode has really captured my attention like this since Killzone 3, which I played to death! So, to give myself a little variety, I wandered into the PlayStation Plus section of the PS Store and saw that Saints Row: The Third was available free of charge. Gratis. Zero cost. Nada. Nil. I snapped it up (it would have been rude not to at that price) and had a blast. A ridiculous game in every respect, but it is good throwaway fun. A little like watching The Expendables to give yourself a brain-break from Romero’s Living Dead series.

This week I spent the majority of my gaming time finishing Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, and what a trip it was. Excellent puzzles and an even better story. Well worth the Platinum trophy in case you haven’t already earned it. I also revisited Guacamelee! with the release of the new El Diablo’s Domain DLC. The addition of Challenge Rooms as well as three new costumes is very welcoming in this already fantastic game. Finally, I rounded out my gaming week with a little The Last of Us multiplayer. While my character is typically the first to be on the receiving end of a wooden plank to the face, I’m slowly getting better. It also hasn’t stopped me from having more than 40 healthy survivors in my camp by Week 2. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep everyone alive and well.

I spent most of my gaming time on The Walking Dead and its 400 Days DLC. Brilliant game, the praise was well deserved! I’ve been playing Yakuza: Dead Souls and Injustice: Gods Among Us, as well as Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark which I’m writing a review for and it’ll be up in the week. Like most people at PS3A, I’ve been playing The Last of Us online but I haven’t been spending as much time with it as I had been a couple of weeks ago. I noticed I hadn’t played much Persona this week (although I did get some new models!) and fixed this by playing Persona 4 Arena. I went to HyperJapan which is a great convention and I look forward to going again in future. If you have an interest in Japanese food, entertainment or traditions then I recommend you check it out if you get the chance.

As per usual at the moment, this week I continued with my current playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII on PS3, and played a bunch of games on Steam, including Bit.Trip Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, Braid, Driver: San Francisco, Grid 2, Hitman: Sniper Challenge, Prince of Persia, Quantum Conundrum, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and The Walking Dead. I also watched Indie Game: The Movie, which was awesome, even though Phil Fish comes across like a complete madman. Now, with over five weeks off work ahead of me (one of the perks of working at a school), I have a ridiculously long list of games I’d like to play, so I hope I can find the time to play them all!
