When you think of Mad Catz, the chances are you probably think of fight sticks, turbo controllers and other hardcore peripherals. It’s less likely that you will think of Mad Catz as a games publisher, but the company is branching out into publishing these days.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has gone through plenty of changes over the last few years and was even on the brink of being cancelled by Kojima Productions before it landed in the hands of Platinum Games. Last year, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix wowed us with a darker and grittier Lara Croft than we’ve seen before. Rebooting the franchise to before Lara was the gun touting, ass kicking heroine we’re familiar with, Tomb Raider depicts a fragile girl who is thrust into danger and must survive at any cost. While we weren’t able to go hands-on with the game, we did get to see a lengthy gameplay demo that expanded on what was shown during Microsoft’s press conference.
When PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was announced, people were quick to dismiss it as just another Smash Bros. clone; after all, it does feature many of PlayStation’s most notable franchise figureheads battling it out in an arena-style fighting game. After going hands-on with the game this past week at E3, we’ve realized that while it may appear similar to Nintendo’s brawler, it’s an entirely different beast.

Lately, the Medal of Honor franchise has been in the shadow of the FPS behemoth that is Call of Duty. 2010′s Medal of Honor reboot received generally positive reviews and Electronic Arts aims to eclipse that with Medal of Honor: Warfighter. The Hitman: Absolution demo at Eurogamer Expo has a smashing start, literally. It begins with Agent 47 — the bald, genetically modified assassin from all Hitman games — smashing headfirst through a window. The act is voluntary, of course; he is trying to find a quiet place to hide from the cops.
Since debuting as a PS2 exclusive, SSX has continued to be an important PlayStation franchise. As part of the system’s launch line-up, it ushered in a new era of smooth gameplay, intuitive controls, sharp graphics and edgy soundtracks. It felt next generation and the critics loved it.
Later SSX games went multi-format, but that didn’t diminish its importance for PlayStation owners, and the fact it’s finally about to arrive on the PS3, five years into this generation, is huge.
