Administered earlier this month to more than 2,700 men aged 18-34 years, a survey found that 75% of respondents had at least one gaming console in their home. Of the men surveyed those 75% who identified themselves as gamers were actually more likely than the non-gamers to go for meals out, go to the cinema, or go out on dates.
As gamers do we feel heartened when reports like this come out and disprove the negative perceptions that surround our hobby, or are we merely quietly horrified that such a quantity of negative perceptions still persist to make such surveys necessary?

We’ve mentioned previously about the debate raging in Australia regarding the lack of an R18+ rating for games.
Well information has now been released that the major cause of resistance to this rating – Michael Atkinson, the South Australian Attorney-General – is stepping down from his position to take a back seat role in the Australian Parliament.
Can Australia now move forward with what we deem to be common sense?
In mid February, two resolutions were passed in Switzerland. The first made the purchase of any game not carrying a PEGI age rating illegal, and required stricter rules on the requirements of ID.
The second resolution was the more interesting one, although it passed with a split vote of nine to three. It potentially gave the Swiss government the power to ban violent games. As the vote was split The Swiss Law Commission sought input on the issue from retail and industry bodies before presenting this to government.
Unfortunately a month on and this resolution has now passed as law – but what does it mean?
On the whole, games are fairly expensive. As the last couple of months have proven, to play all the must have games you need to either have a massive stack of cash – or go down the rental route.
