5 PS3 games that deserve a sequel

While some franchises simply refuse to go away, others seriously struggle to make the leap into multi-game territory. This can be for a number of reasons, but usually comes down to poor sales, regardless of how popular the game is among those who played it. This week, we’ve been discussing the likelihood of whether or not we’ll see a sequel to five of our favourite PS3 games.

5 developers that we wish still existed

Earlier this week, SCE Studio Liverpool became the latest in a long line of developers to unfortunately close their doors. It’s no secret that the videogame industry has been hit extremely hard by the global recession in recent years, so PS3 Attitude thought we’d take some time to remember five of our favourite development studios that are sadly no longer with us.

The hottest PS3 games of 2012 – part 2

We’ve moved on from 2011, but what a fine year it was. It was a year packed with many highlights: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Portal 2, Skyrim, L.A. Noire and Uncharted 3 and Batman: Arkham City, to name just a few.

But we now turn our collective eyes towards the gems 2012 will bestow on us, and it looks set to be another fantastic year.

Over two articles, the PS3 Attitude’s writers are selecting their three most anticipated games of 2012. Staff writers Stefhutch20 and Ryanmoto3 put their votes forward in part 1 and editors DolphGB, Majiesto and Seanoc are following up now.

So without further ado, here are the hottest PS3 games of 2012, selected by Team Attitude.

L.A. Noire | Writer’s GOTY

L.A. Noire | Writer’s GOTY

I’m staring apologetically at my copy of Uncharted 3 as I begin writing this game of the year piece. It’s because it isn’t my game of the year, despite it being the best attempt yet to tie cinematic action with great gameplay and an emotional story. It is a sensational game, and it probably should be the game of the year.

I’ve gone for L.A. Noire instead though, and I’ll briefly explain why. At about this time last year, I decided I wanted something different in 2011. Don’t get me wrong, I looked forward to the big sequels and blockbuster action games as much as the next person did; however, I hoped for something more mature and thoughtful. I wanted a game that dares to be different. I wanted the next Heavy Rain, essentially.

Get all the facts with L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition

Team Bondi’s L.A. Noire has been met with rave reviews for its engaging story and detailed visuals. If you have yet to experience 1947 Los Angeles, then now is the perfect opportunity because Rockstar has announced the release of L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition.

L.A. Noire DLC review: Slip of the Tongue, Naked City, Reefer Madness, Nicholson Electroplating

There is a load of DLC available for L.A. Noire, and if you want it all, irrespective of what’s said in this review, make sure you take advantage of the Rockstar Pass. For a reasonable one-off payment (£9.99/$11.99), you get most of the content, including two detective suits (Broderick and Sharpshooter), four cases (Naked City, A Slip of the Tongue, Nicholson Electroplating and Reefer Madness) and The Badge Pursuit challenge. That leaves only the The Consul’s Car to pick up.

L.A. Noire – the PS3 Attitude review

L.A. Noire is a crime procedural drama from Australian studio Team Bondi, which is looking to recreate the mood and melodrama of classic Noir films of yesteryear – think Chinatown and L.A. Confidential. But unlike most developers who have looked to Hollywood for inspiration only to find a shaven-headed meathead, Team Bondi has used its lessons to create a game that actually has a cinematic quality.

Next week (May 17 US/May 20 UK) we’ll all have the chance to get our incriminating fingerprints on a copy of L.A. Noire at long last. However living in an era of instant-gratification means that these last few days will seem like an eternity.

Hopefully the official launch trailer will be enough to tide you over.

L.A. Noire – Rising through the ranks

The fact of the matter is that there isn’t much more for us to say about L.A. Noire before we actually get to play L.A. Noire. Its relevance and cross-industry potential has been well documented.

In any event Rockstar has released a brand new trailer that gives greater clarity to one Mr. Cole Phelp’s rise through the ranks of the LAPD so why not have a look?

The latest reason to get excited comes by way of the game’s third official trailer centered around Cole Phelps’s tour at the vice desk.

L.A. Noire to be recognized at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival

L.A. Noire to be recognized at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival is held in Lower Manhattan, New York each year to “help filmmakers reach the broadest possible audience, enable the international film community and general public to experience the power of cinema and promote New York City as a major filmmaking center.” For those that don’t necessarily keep up with all things film, having a film exhibited at Tribeca is an tremendous honor.

To have a video game featured would not only be incredibly humbling, it would also be the first time it has ever happened.

LA Noire – welcome to high society

In order to keep interest for L.A. Noire ascending, Rockstar Games has released a dozen new screenshots that pay homage to the late 1940’s Los Angeles society. A time when men wore hats, cars were made of steel, and smoking indoors was just about mandated let alone legal.

Grab a cigar and a tumbler of whiskey (enjoy your Blue Hawaiian and the shunning that comes with it) and take a trip to yesteryear.

L.A. Noire – The truth behind the fiction

L.A. Noire – The truth behind the fiction

By now you know that Rockstar’s forthcoming L.A. Noire is different than any of the studio’s previous games. Not completely divergent but unquestionably distinct.

The narrative is a tightly woven journey through 1940’s Los Angeles as seen through the eyes of fast-rising officer Cole Phelps. Given the period and serious nature of their game Rockstar sought to breathe an air of realism into the experience. What better way to insure authenticity than finding inspiration from L.A.’s vivid crime history.

L.A. Noire gets a release date

With all the hype and excitement surrounding Rockstar’s L.A. Noire it’s a wonder that we really don’t know much about the story.

Yes, we know the time period and the city and presumptions can be taken from there but we have not had much in the way of a concrete story arc.

Luckily we have a new trailer that sheds some light on the narrative behind Rockstar and Team Bondi’s action thriller. Take a look at the trailer and find out when you can expect to play it.

The Year of the Rabbit; 2011 for you and your PS3

The Year of the Rabbit; 2011 for you and your PS3

Well then, dear PS3 lovers… it will soon be the Year of the Rabbit, the happiest of all the Chinese zodiac signs.

In Chinese astrology the Rabbit is considered to be happy and popular. Rabbits are known for their artistic talent and good taste. You might say there are certain attributes of the Rabbit that foretell of a great year for Sony’s flagship console.

So, is that the case? Or will 2011 be more a ‘dog of a year’ than a metaphorical ‘lucky rabbit’s foot’?
