Charles Cecil, the MD of Revolution Software (the UK developer behind Broken Sword and Beneath a Steel Sky), has been speaking about downloadable platforms such as the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. He loves them, but the reason why you haven’t seen anything so far is because “you do need to go hi-res” on those platforms.
The PlayStation Store will no longer update on Thursdays starting in May.
Practically everyone knows the tag team racing duo that is Shake n’ Bake aka Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton. If you aren’t familiar with Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, then head on over to the PSN Video Store and download the film, along with other racing themed videos, for up to 50% off!
This week’s update includes a decent amount of films and shows to choose from such as Wayne’s World, Predator, and Mortal Kombat. There’s also quite a few videos for the kiddies too. Enjoy!
This week’s US PSN Video Store update features everyones favorite little hobbits; Frodo, Sam, Charlie Merry and Pippin. That’s right, the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy is now available to own or rent in HD.
As an added bonus, if you purchase the trilogy from the store before April 15th, you’ll receive a free LotR dynamic theme!
This week’s European Video Store update is relatively bland. None of the films particularly stand out and there are only a few to choose from. If we HAD to recommend a film, we’d go with The Forbidden Kingdom.
The April Foolishness Sale is still going on so your best bet might be checking out what’s available there if you haven’t already.
This summer, Sony plan to roll out a patch that will allow the PS3 to produce stereoscopic 3D images, but Tameen Antoniades, co-founder of Ninja Theory – the team behind Heavenly Sword and the upcoming Enslaved – has warned that the quality will be “limited” this generation.
This week’s US PSN Video Store update brings UFC and V straight to your PS3 and TV. Hmm, what other acronyms can fit into one sentence? How about it’s all in HD too?
On the film side of things, Sherlock Holmes is the heavy hitter this week. There’s also the strangely popular Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and even a few fantastic Pixar Shorts available. Whatever you choose, we’re sure you’ll enjoy.
TikGames and Creat Studios have time and time again come out with great content for the PSN Store, the most recent being Hamsterball and Wakeboarding HD. To reward the teams for their efforts, Sony have decided to give them their own personal space on the PSN.
Much like Capcom, this space will feature all their downloadable games, videos, wallpapers, and other goodies together in one place for any of your shopping needs. Seeing as the consumers are partially responsible for making TikGames and Creat Studios as popular as they are, they have decided to reward us gamers with a 50% off sale!
This week’s EU Video Store update features Heath Ledger’s final performance, The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus, before his death in 2008. His character, Tony, is actually portrayed by three different actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Collin Ferrell in addition to Ledger himself. Surprisingly, this actually works quite well for the film.
The April Foolishness Sale is still going on so if you’re in the mood for comedy, be sure to check out the available titles. The sale lasts until April 8th so get them while they’re cheap.
On Tuesday the PSN will undergo a scheduled maintenance. Don’t worry, it’s not a sign of the apocalyps3. You just might not be able to access the network for about an hour.
The PS3 will be getting a new firmware update next week, version 3.21. Unfortunately, it’s not the kind of update we like to see as it’s only function is the removal of the “Install Other OS” feature of the older generation fat models.
Due to recent security concerns, Sony has decided that this feature has become too much of a risk. The update will be made available on April 1st, 2010 so we can’t help but wonder, could this be an April Fools joke?
This week’s US Video Store update brings a lot of heavy hitters, with Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock leading the way with The Blind Side. Also making an appearance are The Men Who Stare at Goats starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey.
Of course, Twilight: New Moon is making its debut on the Video Store, just as it did in Europe earlier this week. Overall, it’s a good selection of videos to choose from.
Developers Biodroid Productions have just announced that development is currently under way on ‘Replika’, a brand new downloadable title for the PS3.
Whilst details surrounding Replika are fairly scant tat this early stage of the development cycle, what we do know is that the game will be an action/strategy title exclusive to the PSN.
More interestingly however we also already know that the finished product will feature support for native stereoscopic 3D.
After Sony’s extensive teasing of 3D for the PS3 at this years CES, will Replika be the first of many PSN games announced with support for native stereoscopic 3D over the coming months?
Yep, that was the sound of one million teen girls going crazy. Twilight’s latest feature, New Moon, has landed on the PSN and in its honor the EU Video store has set up a special Vampire Collection.
If you’re not into the whole Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson/Taylor Lautner love triangle thing, then don’t fret as there are plenty of other movies for you.
You may not have realised it, but some time last week four PS3 games lost their online functionality forever. These cuts are in addition to a further six games that lost their online capabilities in February. Interestingly two of these games have only been on the market for just over a year.
In light of this, does it bother us that many of the games we now buy are effectively subject to a time limit on much of their content? and as paying customers are we concerned that developers seem to be ever reducing this time limit, whether we like it or not?
This week’s PSN video content includes the blood bath Ninja Assassin, the “real” alien abduction The Fourth Kind, and the boy robot Astro Boy. Those are the highlights as there are plenty more films to choose from if none of them suit you.
On the TV side, this week’s Lost episode is available along with The Simpsons and the free pilot episode of Sons of Tucson.
Sony have been showing off a new tool to developers at their GDC expo booth in San Francisco. Develop-Online say it’s a one day turn around device that allows creators to make non game apps such as eMagazines and training manuals.
Dary! Yep, that’s right How I Met Your Mother is getting a special Featured Collection in this weeks Video Store update.
It features six bro-tastic episodes that have been hand picked by the ladies man himself, Barney Stinson aka Neil Patrick Harris. If you’re not a HIMYM fan yet, now is the perfect time to become one.

LucasArts have announced that it will be coming to the PSN also. Happy Days.
