It’s GamesCom this week, which means that we have a special store update for you!

As with E3 before it, Sony have graciously provided us with a raft of new content in honour of the start of GamesCom, and their incredible Press Conference! Be sure to check out the news here.

It’s been quite a successful day for Sony. With the announcement of the PS3 Slim along with a new lower price and the Video Store making it’s way to the UK, people are going to have a lot of extra cash on hand. What better way to spend it than on a prepaid PSN card!

When Kazou Hirai takes to the stage at Gamescom tonight (2pm EST) the PSN will be powered down for what Sony are calling “routine maintenance.”

It’s not the first time the network has been taken offline for such measures (and it won’t be the last) but speculation is rampant that the fact that the two hour downtime just so happens to coincide with Sony’s keynote at Cologne is no coincidence.

The most likely reason the whole network needs rebooting would be the arrival of a new firmware.

That said, don’t be surprised if they simply chose this time purely because they expect most gamers to be glued to live feeds of the conference and not online killing Helghast.

The brain-child of Doug TenNapel and developed by Shiny Entertainment back in the 1990s, Earthworm Jim holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers.

Noted for its surreal humour and sublime animations, Interplay have now granted Gamesloft the exclusive rights to developer and distribute Earthworm Jim for multiple digital platforms including the PSN.

This weeks PSN Video Store update brings another truck load of movies and television shows but nothing really catches our eye. There is a hodgepodge of content from Babe to Carlito’s Way to Big Trouble in Little China.

The top downloads are still being dominated by less than mediocre films. Why? We have no clue but perhaps something this week will knock them out of the top spot.

Personally, we would recommend Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Garden State if you’re not in the mood for something as depressing.

Those PSN games just keep on coming. This time we have a “fresh and innovative” turn-based strategic game from Amsterdam based W!Games entitled Greed Corp.

Coming across as overtly “green”, the game will be the first in a series from the studio to highlight the destructive force of industry on our environment.

Back at E3 in 2008, on the exact same day as their conference, Sony officially announced and launched a video store for the United States.

But straight away as expected, people from other regions around the world were asking when they would see their own store to download television shows and movies, including some of the latest blockbusters straight on their PS3s.

This weeks video content update for the PSN Store brings a variety of different films and shows. Some of the more notable titles include Hot Fuzz, Remember the Titans, and the new ABC suspense thriller, Defying Gravity. What’s more surprising then anything are the top downloaded films…

By now you’re likely to have finally gotten your hands on all that delicious and forbidden cake.

You’ve therefore no doubt also realised that the game has not only brought numerous gastro-inspired delights to the table but a less palatable menu of glitches, bugs and — the bane of all online gamers — latency issues. That’s “crippling lag” to the rest of us.

Speaking on their official blog, Fat Pricess developer Titan Studios have confirmed that not only are these teething launch issues known, the studio are hard at work getting a patch live as soon as possible that corrects the more blatant of technical hiccups.

Popping up on German ratings website USK, it appears that indie puzzle-platformer and time-bending mega-hit Braid is finally making its way to the PSN.

Lauded over in XBL-land as one of games of the year (that would be last year), you may recall our insightful interview with designer Jonathan Blow where he candidly spoke his mind regarding future outings for his successful game. With talk of exclusivity deals and expiration dates, it would appear the game is finally on its way for PS3 owners.

In case you were without technology, this weekend was the San Diego Comic-Con. Witness as grown men dress as their favorite characters from comics, movies, and games. To celebrate this momentous occasion, this weeks video content update brings a comic book themed collection of movies, tv shows, and specials inspired by the event.

This weeks PSN video update is rather lacking in the movies department. There are plenty of no name films to choose from as well as direct-to-DVD sequels we have come to love. Oh, and don’t forget the Jonas Brothers. They’re there too. Probably the best on the list would be Knocked Up. Anything with Seth Rogan gets an A in our book.

Probably what will get most people excited is the UFC content on the store. All the fights from season 2 are there as well as a few All Access fighters from season 1. If you’re an MMA fan, then this is your week.

The PSN has a ton of content from the classic PlayStation games to even PlayStation Portable ones. Today marks a new step for the network as PC Engine, aka TurboGrafx to us, games have been added for your playing pleasure.

The titles to appear are Bomberman ‘94, New Adventure Island (Takahashi Meijin no Shin Boukenjima), Sengoku Mahjong, and Devil Crush. While they are currently only available on the Japanese PSN for Â¥600, we imagine that this could become a more worldwide occurrence.

Speaking to GameIndustry.biz’s Kath Brice, Relentless Software’s Andrew Eades and David Amor have revealed their plans to add a little mystery to the PSN this winter.

Announcing their new episodic title Blue Toad Murder Files, Andrew and David also reveal how their future plans include widening their horizons into the domain of self-publishing with the PSN murder mystery exclusive being the first of what could be many titles from the company.

If you haven’t noticed 2D fighters are currently in. From the highly successful Street Fighter IV, the recently released BlazBlue, and the upcoming King of Fighters XII, it looks like fans can’t get enough of them.

Announced for the PSN, Aksys Games brings us yet another 2D fighter; Battle Fantasia. Set in a magical world filled with light and dark, heroes fight in an endless struggle between the two. What sets the game apart from all other fighters is its unique RPG elements.

iTrophies is a handy PS3 trophy app for the iPhone/iTouch every self-respecting Trophy Whore must own.

Noticing a niche in the market, developer Viru has created an app that not only allows you to review your own trophy progress, but also compare your current haul with that of your friends whether you’re on the bus, at work or jet-setting around the world. Connection permitting of course.

Thanks to our friends over at The Sixth Axis, and tipsters TheDeathAvenger and stefhutch20, it appears that the Pure Time Trials DLC for vertigo infused Mirror’s Edge has suddenly jumped from the lofty price of £6.99/€9.99 to zero.

This weeks PSN Video update is very Sci-Fi heavy with Nicolas Cage’s Knowing and the Jumper look-alike, Push.

Also included is a film that we highly recommend, The Matador, if you’re into documentaries. For the WTF list, Evil Bong II: King Bong probably takes the cake.

In the first of a two-part interview with our friends over at PC World, Eric Lempel spills the beans on firmware and the future of the PS3.

Of particular interest is what we can expect to see in terms of future updates and the regularity of said updates.

And importantly we find out what was really in the most recent update, Firmware 2.80.

This weeks update to the PSN video store includes the highly popular Paul Blart: Mall Cop, which took in an amazing $180,445,413. Who would have thought watching Kevin James riding a Segway would be so popular. Street Fighter also makes an appearance with The Legend of Chun-Li. We wonder if it’s any better than the last live-action Street Fighter they made?

In other news, Gran Torino continues its reign as the top downloaded film this week as well.We have a feeling that this won’t last too much longer if Paul Blart does as well in digital form as it did in theaters.
