Dev diary: building Sorcery around PS Move

Sorcery was originally announced at E3 in 2010. Sony initially hoped for a spring 2011 launch but that date was later changed to autumn 2011, and then Spring 2012.

Far from being concerned by the delays, we actually see this as a good sign that the studio is taking its time to ensure that this isn’t just another lazy PS Move title. We’ve had plenty of those already.

Max Payne 3 – dissecting ‘bullet time’

Few franchises are synonymous with a single gameplay mechanic the way that Max Payne is with ‘bullet time’. The tortured former NYPD officer has been evading and plugging ne’er-do-wells thanks to the subdued effects of father time since his PS2 debut.

With Max Payne 3′s mid-May debut fast approaching, Rockstar Games would like to give a look at the continued evolution of ‘bullet time’.

The potential fallout of BioWare’s new Mass Effect 3 ending

You may not know it but we stand on the precipice of one of the most important development decisions in video game history. One whose ripple effects will be felt throughout the industry moving forward.

If BioWare goes ahead with the purported changes to the Mass Effect 3 ending, it stands to set a damning precedent potentially hamstringing the creative integrity of future creative endeavors.

Mass Effect 3 – The PS3 Attitude Review

For developer BioWare, Mass Effect 3 represents perhaps the highest degree of difficulty that any studio has faced leading into a project. With two stellar games already seeded in the public consciousness, the third and conclusive act in the Mass Effect series comes with heaps of well-earned pressure. BioWare’s ambitious directive to carry specific player decisions over the entirety of the trilogy also creates a unique set of circumstances and expectations surrounding the final chapter.

With that in mind you’d be hard pressed to find another studio anyone would rather trust with the biggest RPG release in recent memory than the Canadian-based studio. Chances are you started putting money aside for ME3 right around the time ME2 wrapped up, however those with lingering doubts should quickly put them to bed. Mass Effect 3 is a masterpiece that demands to be played.

How UK games industry responded to tax break victory

George Osborne’s 2012 budget didn’t please everyone. It was even described as “cynical, deluded and regressive” by one political commentator. But you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Can you? Osborne may be consoling himself with that sentiment at the moment.

Osborne did please some of the people, though. Those people are the good folk working in the UK games industry. After snatching away their tax breaks in his first budget, he’s decided that they are necessary and good for the country.

Need for Speed: The Run – The PS3 Attitude Review

False starts: the nitrous, coast-to-coast racer, Need for Speed: The Run has had a few. The first one happened at its unveiling at E3, when the debut trailer worryingly focused on the game’s, erm, innovative QTE-led cutscenes. The trailer, unsurprisingly, was met with a mixture of confusion and bafflement.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – The PS3 Attitude Review

When it comes to the video game industry, the Call of Duty franchise reigns supreme, specifically the Modern Warfare series. How many other games can say they’ve sold millions of copies in a single day or had the biggest launch in entertainment history? Yeah, not many.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to hunt for Russian Ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov in its main single-player campaign and further enhances its already top-notch multiplayer experience. Has the gameplay changed enough over the last iteration, or does the old “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” saying still ring true?
