Square Enix party video to hit Japanese PS Store tomorrow

Sony have announced that the Japanese PlayStation Store update this week will include footage from the recent Square Enix party.

Whilst we are not totally sure as to what the content may or may not be included, we understand that the footage will contain some of the trailers shown in the 'strictly-no-cameras-allowed' theatre area.

If you have a Japanese PS Store account, set a reminder to check the video section tomorrow for some sweet Final Fantasy XIII action.

[UPDATE] Due to an incorrect Japanese -> English translation, this is actually not right. The footage is hitting PSTV not the PS Store; PSTV is another name for the point-of-sale kiosks in Japan. Thanks to our friend Nofi from TheSixthAxis for pointing us in the right direction...

Final Fantasy XIII: rumour tennis and news wrap-up

Over the weekend, Square-Enix held an event in Japan for their dutiful fans. During the event, the invited few were treated to two separate viewings of the new trailers for FF XIII, FF Versus XIII and FF Agito XIII (the PSP title; mobile version has been scrapped), amongst other things.

Well, when we say 'invited few', what we really mean is hundreds of lucky punters. And we're jealous of each and every single one of them.

So, what was discussed, shown and played during the event? And what has the fallout been from the recent FF XIII X360 version announcement?

1. In March 2009 next year, Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete will arrive on Blu-ray. The movie will have a Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII demo on the disk for PS3 only. It will also include a Final Fantasy Agito XIII demo for the PSP.

2. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is going to remain a PS3 exclusive.

3. Development of Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 is a topic of much discussion, especially in terms of impact on the PS3 edition:

One camp is saying one thing. "We're making the PS3 version first, and then porting to the 360 later.... I'm telling [the development team] to not think about the Xbox 360 right now. We can think about it after the development kits arrive... Right now, we're fully concentrating on the PS3 version." - Motomu Toriyama, Square Enix

And yet we are receiving information more pertinent to Europe that sounds a little distressing. "With the PS3 version complete and hitting Japan in 2009, PS3 gamers in the United States and Europe will have to wait until the Xbox 360 port is done. According to Nomura, his team didn't receive Xbox 360 development kits until a few days ago, so depending on how long it takes the Square Enix team to port the title, the U.S. and Europe may not receive Final Fantasy XIII until 2010." - Justin Pinter, PSU

4. Square-Enix announced a PS3 bundle with the aforementioned Advent Children Complete will also arrive in March 2009, but we think this is probably for Japan only.

5. The title of the Square-Enix event, DKƩ3713, stands for Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts, Sigma Harmonics, Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday, Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 13.

So, that's the complete round up of PS3-related news. We think the development and release schedule arguments, especially when it comes to worldwide release, are going to run and run.

Final Fantasy XIII - why we're happy it's on the 360

Some of you may have been rocked today by the news that Final Fantasy XIII will be available on the Xbox 360.

Some of you may be slightly happier now that Square Enix have confirmed Final Fantasy Versus XIII will stay a PS3 exclusive.

I, on the other hand, am not worried in the slightest.

If by putting FF XIII, which by all accounts has cost an obscene amount of money to create, on the Xbox 360 means that FF XIV will see the light of day, then so be it.

Despite growing faster than the PS2, the PS3 sits with a user base that runs to 'just' 13 million. The Xbox 360 is enjoyed by over 19 million people. Sure, the PS3 is catching the X360 fast despite an almost two-year head start, but at this stage in its lifecycle the user base is still small for publishers like Square Enix.

The PS2 went on to sell over 117 million units (and is still selling!), so the future is looking great for the PS3. Sony only need a smal percentage of 'churn' to make the PS3 much more succesful that Microsoft's console. But this decision, announced at E3 during the Microsoft keynote, will help secure a payback for Square Enix that they simply would not have achieved with the PS3 alone.

Many people forget that Square have already gone down the bankrupcy path once before. If by making their flagship game available to over twice the audience ensures the new Square Enix company survive the same fate, then I'm happy.

Even if the Xbox 360 version will come on 6 discs (Ed: had to get one dig in there - sorry).

Square-Enix Members site is opening; pre-register now

Square-Enix have had a Members area of their Japanese site for quite some time now. But never before have we had an English version that delivers news of their games in our native tongue.

But now that is all about to be changed.

Launching on 24th March, the new Square-Enix Members site for North America is on the way. You don't have to be in the US to register, of course, but the key difference here is that everything is in English.

No longer will you have to use the terrible Google Translation services to read the latest news on Final Fantasy XIII. I know it's fun reading stuff like...

Your avatar "at the city's forgotten" what it takes to play! In the city, people from the city to hear the latest information on the game, the big screen movie promotional screenings will be held.

...but it's not very helpful, so bringing everything to us in English is welcome.

If you pre-register now to be able to gain access immediately on 24th March, so head over to the Square-Enix Members website and get your name on the list.

TGS 07 nearly here; Top 10 most anticipated games have created a montage of the Top 10 most anticipated games at the Tokyo Games Show this year.

Devil May Cry 4
Last Remnant

So, 70% of the Top 10 according to Gametrailers are on the PS3, and 30% of them are exclusives. Not bad, wouldn't you say?!

PS3 features well in Famitsu's Most Wanted

Whilst Dragon Quest IX for the DS holds on to the top spot, and with Halo 3 re-entering the top 20 most wanted titles at Famitsu (position 19 in fact) , the PS3 has 8 of the 20 titles Japanese consumers want most.

In the top 5, four of them are PS3 franchises. FF XIII leads the way followed by Biohazard 5 (or Resident Evil 5 as we know it), Monster Hunter 3 and MGS 4.

The full list is available from Total Gamer Zone.

News from the PlayStation Premier event in Tokyo

As we heard from Kojima-san at last week's E3 keynote, he is showing a real demo of MGS4 in Tokyo today.

While we wait for any video footage we can get our hands on let's wrap up the rest of the news from today's PlayStation Premier press event.

First up, we found out after the demo that a new Metal Gear Solid title is coming our way! Kojima-san announced they are producing a PS3 version of the online game that was included in MGS3 Subsistence. It looks like they will show this at the MGS 20th Anniversary Party next week in Tokyo.

Tekken 6 is announced as a full online title. We know that we are going to get an updated Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection title on the PS Store soon that will provide online battles, so this isn't a great shock.

News from the floor is that Final Fantasy XIII is only 13% complete at this time! But that's ok, since Final Fantasy Versus XIII is supposedly less than 2% complete, so in comparison they're storming ahead.

Grand Turismo 5 Prologue, as announced at E3, is supposed to be arriving in October.

White Knight Story will be playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show which is being held in September.

And my favourite news of the day - LocoRoco for the PS3 is on the way. Slated for release via the PS Store in the near future (it is 95% complete) the tentatively titled "Buu Buu Cocoreccho! by LocoRoco" will feature over 200 LocoRoco characters and full use of the SixAxis as its control mechanism.

Check back soon for the MGS4 demo video assuming I can get my grubby mitts on it!
